Colours

Do you have yellow tones in your blonde hair that you would like to get rid of? Or did your hair turn green on the last trip to Ibiza? Here is a guide on how colours work, to make it easier for you to dye your hair at home.

You might remember from school that there are three primary colours. These colours make up every other colour there is.

The colours are red, blue and yellow. Together with black and white, these colour can be mixed to every other colour. We will in this article take a closer look on just how that knowledge can be useful when dying your hair.

You already know that if you mix red and blue you will get purple, and if you mix yellow and blue you will get green. But did you know that if you mix together equal amounts of the three primary colours you will get brown? This is the colour we call neutral when we speak about hair, and that goes for blonde hair aswell.

On the picture above we have the neutral brown colour in the middle, the one you get when mixing red, blue and yellow. On the left side I have added some white, and on the right side I have added black. All three are neutral colours.

But how can this knowledge Help us when dying our hair?

On the picture above is the neutral blonde colour in the middle. To the left is a more yellow version. That means it has more yellow pigment that red and blue. This means that if you want to get your hair in a more neutral colour you will have to add red and blue, which is purple. That is why many colour correction shampoo are purple. On the right side is a blonde which is heavy in orange pigment. Orange is of course made of red and yellow which means you will have to add blue if you wish to get rid of the strawberry blonde.

One problem many blondes have is that the hair can turn green when swimming in pools. Green is blue and yellow so adding in some red should Help with that.

The same goes for brown hair. We have the neutral version in the middle as before, and to the right a more red version. To the right we have a cooler brown. It has more blue in it. To make it more neutral we have to add in some red and yellow, orange.

Still quite hard to get?

Look at this wheel. The colours on the opposite each other will turn neutral when mixed. For example blue and orange or purple and yellow.
